Instrumental Music

Beaufort Secondary College has a very vibrant Instrumental Music Program (conducted by Mr Yates) which gives students the opportunity to learn an instrument of their choice, at (for the time being) no cost to the student.

Students may hire their instrument from Musicorp through the school for a small fee that varies between $200 - $450 per annum. Students receive weekly lessons during class time, on a rotating, withdrawal basis whereby they miss a different subject each week.

Students are also encouraged (when appropriate) to attend band practice during Thursday lunchtimes. From time to time the band performs at school and also to the wider community.

Advance

Young people and communities working together. Advance – a program for Youth Development. The government believes that all young people should have the opportunity to benefit from, and contribute to, a full range of social, educational and cultural activities.

Advance is a partnership between the Government, schools and community organisations. The program provides young people with opportunities to build their strengths and capacities by working with local community organisations.

The essential elements are that the young people DO something with the community, and in partnership with a community organisation and that it involves young peoples choice.

For the students at Beaufort Secondary College Advance has provided the opportunity to become involved in a range of activities in the local community and further a field.

Over the past five years students have a great deal of fun raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, assisted with the local primary school and the Beaufort Hostel to mention a few.

VELS

2006 sees the introduction of Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) at Beaufort Secondary College. This new curriculum planning and restructuring for primary schools and secondary schools up to Year 10, addresses the findings of over a decade of research into the Middle Years of Schooling where student engagement and learning is most problematic.

VELS is a multi-faceted approach to teaching, learning and assessment, which takes into account the social and wellbeing factors that best contribute to student learning, and the thinking skills and learning strategies that contribute to lifelong learning and community participation.

The staff of Beaufort Secondary College have been actively engaged in auditing and preparing units of work to provide a valuable curriculum to students from Years 7 to 10, in 2006. As with schools across the state, there will be a staggered implementation of, and reporting on VELS, with the first changes occurring in the discipline areas of English and Mathematics. Beaufort Secondary College staff, supported by a consultant, approach the delivery of a rigorous and inclusive curriculum for 2006 with the confidence.

  • Develop skills to manage their pathways throughout their working lives and to manage lifelong learning.
  • Develop their knowledge, understanding and experience of opportunities in education, training and employment.
  • Move through the transition phase from compulsary schooling to further education, training and employment.
