Curriculum

Subjects / Units of study

  1. All units of study are taught and assessed on a semester basis.
  2. Unit course outlines are distributed to students at the commencement of each semester, and parents are encouraged to monitor their children’s work. These documents will include goals, content, general requirements, work requirements and assessment tasks. Unit descriptions will also be found in the relevant year level handhook
  3. Units of Study are kept up-to-date by being required to undergo accreditation by the school's Curriculum Committee every three years.

Special and Priority Programs

a. Computer Studies

This is a priority curriculum area at Beaufort Secondary College. All students have the opportunity to learn computer skills on up-to-date computer hardware and software. The school library is fully computerised and has computers available for student use with CD-ROM and access to the Internet.

b. Landcare

The school is developing a landcare demonstration trail on its site for use by the community and neighbouring schools as a learning area. Originally purchased by the College for development as a ‘farm’, the area was badly affected by salinity and erosion. Some of the work currently being undertaken includes:

  • Development of some of the wetlands, which are on the site, for the study of flora and fauna.
  • There is also a dam that we have enlarged, complete with an island, in order to encourage the return of wildlife.
  • Establishment of a small stand of euclaypts from seed collected and propagated by students.
  • The planting of native kangaroo grass using seeds harvested by former students.
  • Development of an area of indigenous plant species used by Koorie people for food.
  • Reclamation of salt affected areas by revegetation.
  • Gorse control.

c. Technology Studies

A priority in the school’s Charter is to enhance the Key Learning Area of Technology Studies. Technology (Metals) and Electronics courses have been developed over the past two years, and a considerable amount of money has been committed to improving the resources in these subject areas.

d. Work Education Program

This involves three separate options for students:

  • Work Experience — Year 10 students undertake two weeks Work Experience as part of their Work Education Program.
  • Industry and Enterprise Studies — Year 11/12 students may choose to select Industry and Enterprise Studies as a VCE subject which involves a minimum of 35 hours in the workplace each Semester.
  • VET course — Senior Studies may also choose a VET (Vocational Educational and Training) course which involves a workplace and a TAFE Component. This will enable them to earn a TAFE Certificate (usually Level 1 or 11) as well as their VCE when they finish secondary schooling.
